SUMMARY - The state of North Carolina (country: United States of America) continues to be burdened by pertussis (otherwise known as "whooping cough") as Mason County now reports 6 confirmed cases of the illness as of Friday (June 7, 2024). There are at least four other counties with known pertussis cases although some of those counties have not had confirmed new cases for awhile.

Five Western North Carolina counties now have confirmed pertussis, or whooping cough, cases. Health officials emphasize the importance of vaccines and vigilance during summer vacation.
