Global - "White Lung Syndrome" - Affecting Children Worldwide
« on: November 22, 2023, 02:34:12 pm »
UPDATE (2023-11-30) - The illness has since been called "White Lung Syndrome" and has spread globally. The name of the topic ("China - "Mystery Pneumonia" Outbreak Sweeps through Children") has been altered to reflect this change and the fact that it is no longer contained to China but is now global.

////////////////////////////////////////

UPDATE (2023-11-25) - Until more information arrives that provides a clearer understanding for what is the exact nature of this outbreak, speculating that this outbreak is a "Covid-19" type of outbreak is not responsible. People are getting sick and they are getting sick in larger-than-normal numbers but there is no credible evidence to suggest that they are getting sick with a Covid-19 styled ailment. However, standard precautions should prevail nonetheless: Wear an N95 mask when you are in crowds, limit your exposure to people who are outside of your immediate group and wash your hands.

The original post is presented below.

////////////////////////////////////////

SUMMARY - Hospitals in the Beijing and Liaoning province of China are reporting an outbreak of a "mystery pneumonia" sweeping through children. Symptoms include a high fever and inflammation of the lungs.

As someone else posited on social media today, the 2 Chinese cities mentioned in most articles are 800 km apart, so this is not localized. The second thing is that lung scoping procedures are increasingly necessary with this outbreak, which is apparently not a sign of "mild" infection.

Thank you for that additional information.

I have no other information except for the following tidbits:

** Covid-19 was initially described as a "mystery pneumonia" or "mysterious pneumonia" as well. It would be premature to call what is being described here as the 'next' Covid. However, the situation also bears watching as China was not transparent during the initial stages of Covid-19.

** Perhaps in a bid to ease fears (or be more accurate?), I have seen this also described as 'undiagnosed pneumonia.' I'm not sure exactly what the semantics mean from a clinical or diplomatic sense; Perhaps it is the same type of rebranding done with "Mpox" (formerly Monkeypox).

** This situation has been widely reported and the one link that I provided is just one of perhaps a dozen or more at this point. However, a lot of those links tend to be copies of the same basic information and presumably from the same sources. Until more sources can speak of this situation, caution as to the accuracy of the reports might be prudent.

SUMMARY - The World Health Organization has been in contact with authorities in the country of China to ask for more information concerning the "mystery pneumonia" (also described as "undiagnosed pneumonia") that has been affecting children in the country in two provinces. There are plausible explanations for these increases such as seasonal fluctuations in illnesses and even possible inaccuracy on the part of ProMED, the originator of the initial report.

It is also important to note that 'plausible explanations' are not the same as actual causes. Until more sources other than ProMED can confirm that there is an increase and until the Chinese authorities provides data that is deemed credible by multiple independent medical authorities to offer a non-"Covid scenario" explanation to this event, the entire incident must be regarded with caution.

SUMMARY - A variety of articles are suggesting that a new culprit, mycoplasma pneumonia (sometimes called "walking pneumonia") may be to blame for a number of the new cases that are being experienced in China and elsewhere. It is interesting to note that nations such as France and South Korea are also experiencing heightened waves of infection. India, a nation that borders China, has so far not reported any situations that mirror what China is currently facing.

Very unusual to see Ohio be the first area to experience this. This tells me there are more cases in other parts of the US that we don't know about yet. Also tells me we need to be doing contact tracing on this right away.

SUMMARY - The state of Massachusetts, inside of the country of the United States, is experiencing an increase in what has been described as "White Lung syndrome"-type of cases. It is worthy of note that there are few specifics and the media may be over-reacting in this particular case. Nevertheless, Massachusetts and Ohio are now being grouped together (fairly or unfairly) in many articles about the White Lung Syndrome outbreak.

SUMMARY - The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (in the country of the United States) is now downplaying the increase of pneumonia cases in that state, citing that the levels of pneumonia is typical of pre-Covid years and that the rise is due to typical seasonal fluctuations. Elsewhere, one expert has stated that, despite the outbreaks in China & the United States being similar, there is no evidence that the outbreak in China caused the ones in the United States.
