STSS - Japan - 2024 outbreak
« on: June 20, 2024, 04:22:11 pm »
SUMMARY - The country of Japan is currently experiencing a spike in the cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). The country reports 977 cases as of June 2nd of this year, as compared to 941 cases for the entirety of 2023. STSS is considered a complication of invasive group A streptococcal disease (iGAS). iGAS, itself, is a severe form of what is commonly referred to as "strep throat." STSS has a 30% mortality rate and is considered a "flesh-eating bacteria" due to its ability to destroy body tissue (called 'necrosis'). A suspected cause for the rise in cases is the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions in the country. The World Health Organization (WHO) has not yet recommended any travel restrictions to the country.

SUMMARY - Facial masks are returning to Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the Philippines as the MIAA (Manila International Airport Authority) is advising travelers while inside of the airport to wear them in order to arrest the spread of an outbreak of Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) that is emanating from the country of Japan. That outbreak is currently listed as having 1,109 cases within the first six months of this year (2024).
