SUMMARY - The country of Nigeria is struggling to contain an outbreak of Diphtheria which has left 800 people dead and 14,000 infected since the start of 2023. The epicenter of the current outbreak is in the state of Kano although the outbreak has spread through half of the nations 36 states. Diphtheria is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening bacterial disease which affects the respiratory tract and skin. Lack of vaccines, declining immunization and vaccine skepticism has contributed to the current outbreak.
