lol..also I think we need to do more than advise parents to teach their children to merely cough into the crevice of their inner elbows at schools to prevent outbreaks.(there was a school with outbreaks that said that was one of the reasons kids were getting sick was because they were failing to cover up their involuntary cough spasms properly and that parents need to teach kids how to not cough so openly)
"Teach your child the "Cover Your Cough" maneuver recommended by health professionals. Simply cough into the crook of the elbow instead of covering the cough with your hands".

...Masked Man reasons:I mean sure its better than nothing to cough into one's elbow but it doesn't compare to the benefits of masking something of which seems to be completely ignored by most health professionals.
Not to defend anyone or be contrarian but the "cough into your elbow" pre-dates Covid-19 by more than a few years and was never meant to be a substitute for masking. My understanding of that situation is that most people cough into their hands and then they touch objects with their hands which will spread germs. Conversely, the inside of your elbow tends to touch nothing that others would touch and so, therefore, coughing into it was seen as the lesser of two evils.
Of course, we live in an (ever-so-slightly more) enlightened age where people who are generally unwell are now more inclined to either stay home or mask (at least with a surgical) as opposed to walking around and coughing. However, the education is there should people find themselves without a mask.
Yes, I guess it all depends on the other person.. like my neighbor... he is so horrible he stands too close to your face when he talks...
This study seems to support that it is better to sneeze into a sleeved elbow (it almost seems better to sneeze into hands but only if you could wash hands thoroughly immediately afterwards)
https://www.scienceabc.com/humans/is-it-better-to-cover-a-sneeze-with-your-hand-or-elbow.html#google_vignetteI agree coughing into elbow is better than nothing but there have been some research that shows into a bare elbow does not provide “a proper seal against airflow from the nose” and mouth. Coughing this way allows potentially contaminated respiratory droplets to escape in many directions... depends on technique I guess one could cup hands to get a better seal then wash hands immediately... either way depending on technique air is going to shoot or leak out out from one corner or another...
its funny that supposedly this only works if you are wearing a sleeve and then nobody throws away their sleeve after they sneeze into it of course like its a dirty tissue...
...Ironically turns out mother must be wrong for having told us repeatedly all those years not to wipe our nose on our sleeves...
...what they really want is to start designing clothes with what I would call a built in "sputter bag. It would be of clothing that had a built in bag one could sputter, sneeze cough or do whatever they want into and maybe it could have a nice little draw string to close the sputter bag with when you are finished expelling into it..ha! I still think the mask is better.
...I agree its better than nothing to sneeze into something but I fear its just an excuse for people to pretend they are behaving responsibly when they go out in public sick and they don't want to wear a mask so they cough into their elbows then hug people anyway..lol
I guess the sleeve is the preferred way method to blow germs into according to "myth busters"

Coughing into your elbow: a (new) old wives' tale
POSTED ON 19 DECEMBER 2023
TL;DR: There is little to no evidence to show that coughing into your elbow prevents the spread of disease.
LINK:
https://www.yorku.ca/professor/drsmith/2023/12/19/coughing-into-your-elbow-a-new-old-wives-tale/Either way I have really horrible nasty unmannered neighbors who take no precautions and are probably on their last set of legs so to speak a heart attack waiting to happen again for that neighbor and I personally always mask and haven't caught covid yet so I haven't really test the sleeve method out and I suspect that some germs are so strong in covid or the measles that simply being in the room with somebody that has covid might very well get you sick even if they do sneeze into their elbow or cough into their elbow over and over... I'll let others test the wiping nose on your sleeve trick out..like I said Ive never caught covid and I mask a lot.
For me it all depends on the other person I have a neighbor so stupid so dumb he stands too close too people's faces when he talks you can feel his spit, He uses an excavator and buries a culvert with giant rocks that crush his culvert and flood out his own house and he blew up his truck engine the other day because he simply left his truck running to charge up his battery I guess and didn't bother to check his temperature gauge... the engine overheated , spewing poisonous antifreeze fluid all over driveway, and if engine had caught on fire then whole side of mountain could have gone up in smoke, while he was out running errands in another vehicle... this is also why I mask. You can't teach guys like that to cover their mouths is all I know. We are limited by our neighbor's intellegence and practices.
In a nightmare scenario where a mask wasn't available ,I do support the notion that people should cover their coughs and sneezes with their elbow and that it is probably better than nothing but not better than a mask or two masks for that matter...lol. Nothing is mentioned of sneezing or coughing with neck tilted downward through collar into the inside of shirt something Ive witnessed before as a teenager... Dracula sort of used a cape like a shroud and sort of covered his face with part of a cape when stalking prey so you could only see his eyes above the cape..
Again I have neighbors who take no precautions and probably have had covid and have had a heart attack and seem to have problems cognitively so I have to defend myself from them and wear a mask and keep personal boundaries.. I can't afford to rely on the sneezing into arm crevice because of my neighbor's behaviors who will probably not be round much longer.
I guess what I think is that I don't want to be around someone who is sneezing into their elbow or coughing into their elbow...lol.. That seems dangerous. That scenario simply scares me. I hear a sneeze or cough even from somebody standing outside and I hope I hear it from a distance.. long distance...lol Oh man just the idea of being next to person without a mask freaks me out!!
While I think people should cover sneezes and coughs in theory and may help a little its just not enough protection for me from others..The CDC's suggestion to sneeze into elbow simply isn't enough it doesn't apply and won't protect me whatsoever because of my neighbor's risky behavior. My neighbors are super nice but super dumb.. they are too nice and go to church and they probably don't cough and sneeze into one another face but they are losing this battle of covid nonetheless. He and she are older ..he's had a heart attack ..he runs around maskless and there's some signs of dementia now ... he should have masked like me because I see it coming. That family is falling apart. It sad really I warned him as I mask outside my door. He's older and like I said he's caught covid and already on his first heart attack and he's not protecting himself fully. I keep my distance from that type of guy.. its only a matter of time for him.
In my neighbor's case it would fall upon deaf ears to tell him to cover his face... he's simply to impaired so it would be dangerous for me to advise him as I already have implied he should be more careful and I just know he's of the mind people should just catch diseases and leave it up to God because that's my neighbor's way of thinking. Some people don't have boundaries and don't really respect other people's boundaries.. there are those people that simply don't mind making other's uncomfortable. My neighbor is like a know it all and a hot headed bully doesn't listen and does all the talking completely incapable of understanding certain cause and effect phenomena unable to understand even the easiest form of physics and has problems with spacial things invoking geometry ..what you might term a ball hog ..a guy that operates not unlike Trump if I may speculate freely on the matter. Anyway he wouldn't know if he was sick if he was sick and he one of these guys that runs up to ya and is a needy fast talker always has something up his sleeve... a dominating alpha type on some days and a big whining baby the next.. holds his jaw out when he's trying to look tough.. you know always making a face not unlike Trump. Probably an embezzler of various funds.. not the kind of guy I want coming up to me. Fortunately I know all this and make myself undesirable to him and so he doesn't mess with me like he does everyone else.
That being said, It's possible that through the press or media that typically advising people to cover their face when they think they are sputtering is surely better than nothing.
One could almost argue that the inner elbow a a very brief form of a temporary mask that then gets turned inside out and is worn on their sleeve but its just not a good mask... I fear the elbow is the lazy man's mask so to speak and is being used in place of a mask... Kind of like the poor man's wishful mask thinking. its like a hanky one blows into then ties around elbow. I dunno a guy sneezes into sleeve leaving hands clean and never touches his face to even check for excess moisture under his nose with a finger for the remaining time he's in the area would be a rare occurrence. People are always putting their hands to their chins thinking. People just touch their faces all the time ..look at Johnny Carson on tv and lots of people always rubbing their nose or scratching a little itch. The chances someone doesnt touch their face after sneezing or coughing into their sleeve just seems highly improbable.
We also haven't begun to consider the other person, the one that didn't sneeze or cough.. they put their fingers to their faces as well. Why doesn't CDC say people should cover their faces when other people sneeze? That's the whole key to not getting sick. We tell people to cover up their coughing and sneezing when they are already sick and we or rather the CDC doesn't say cover up your mouth when somebody else sneezes to actually prevent the spread of a virus. That's what I don't understand this tendency to mask sick people and not healthy ones in attempt prevent the spread of virus
The CDC never says enough in my opinion "Cover up your mouth with a mask and don't breathe in the air when somebody like a whole nation is sick or coughing.
OH! and here's yet another scenario what of people that sneeze and aren't sick!? In other words is sneezing and coughing and excess mucus clearing an opportunity for the sneezer to get sick?... what I am saying here is lets say a person who is healthy sneezes and wipes his nose on his sleeve which is actually contaminated from the airborne diseases of another? could that sneezer then get sick from an airborne disease from an asymptomatic person who had simply expelled airborne disease into the air? You see many viruses are asymptomatic and laughing into the air is also supposed to be just as bad as coughing or sneezing and since many people spreading diseases are not showing symptoms it could very well be that people sneezing are actually getting sick from asymptomatic people in the room. I would not overlook this possibility since many people spread viruses when they are asymptomatic. In the past there were many times I would catch a cold or get sick in a room full of people that never coughed or sneezed excessively. It was never obvious when I got sick who I got it from. Adccording to experts, covid for example, is carried and transmitted by people who don't necessarily feel that sick .. its called asymptomatic.
"May 14, 2023 — These droplets are expelled when someone with the airborne disease sneezes, coughs, laughs, or otherwise exhales in some way"
.. so to be fair because of the asymptomatic nature of some of the airborne illnesses we'd really need to tell people to also cover up their laughter or their heavy breath when being boisterous or lifting objects or being athletic. Again the problem isn't necessarily just the cougher and sneezers.. those are the dead giveaways .. the problem is with the asymptomatic; that seems to be the case with covid (not sure about measles)it seems to be the people who aren't coughing or sneezing and hugging and kissing like on Saturday night Live Reunions and laughing and itching yet still making everybody sick. Its also a little like saying who is to blame? Do we blame the sick ones for making us healthy ones sick or do we blame the healthy ones for letting the sick ones make them sick. All this is food for thought and interesting the way we respond to preventative measures.
I guess all this introspection on the matter applies to measles considering a Texas hospital wasn't able to to notice any apparent symptoms of measles from a woman who gave birth and also gave an outbreak of measles to 300 plus infants or so at a Texas hospital recently. Guess she was breathing heavy and the droplets shot into the room and the airborne illness of measles went all over the room. I guess she should have sneezed into her sleeve but measles is so contagious. it does kind of seem ridiculous would the CDC have advised that pregnant lady with measles breathe heavy into the crevice of her arm when she was having that baby...lol.. nah in the setting in a hospital setting the healthy doctors and nurses should have masked and I guess isolated that woman to give birth... I guess there's no crowd control in the hospital.. so tragic all those measles and all that suffering. There must be a way of circumventing that from happening again and again. So awful that measles outbreak.
I guess my stance on sneezing and coughing into elbow is that while it might deflect some germs it simply isn’t all encompassing enough to make me really feel safe for both the sneezer and the sneezee like a mask does considering viruses can be a symptomatic and be airborne despite sneezing and coughing. I can envision a guy covering up his mouth when he sneezes one minute and laughing in my face the next.
You can tell by the length of this reply how humbled I am and downright wary of catching the cold of death... its been a little over five years now of me masking and not getting sick I'd be afraid to gamble my life on anything less than wearing a mask at this stage. its hard for me mentally to wrap my mind around anything less than masking outside my door so much is my habit of masking engrained. I admit I am very skeptical trusting another to somehow shield their mouths and their vapors with an arm or anything since I am die hard masker. lol.. seems like an insult almost to a guy that wears a mask all the time to even be around maskless people for me because Ive trained myself to simply always wear my mask. A lot of other preventative measures just seem like nothing to me probably because I have filter over my mouth and nose and the maskless don't. So I must admit I dare scoff and even poke fun of those that think they can somehow shield their covid or measles vapors from filling some public room. Psychologically it seem in my best interest to assume sneezing into arm doesn't work to be on the safe side for a masker like me. Since I mask and the sneezer doesn't it just doesn't make sense for me to even be around such a person ... this is a strong feeling for me because Espouse because I have conditioned myself to wear the mask. I actually get grossed out and somewhat turned off by the maskless probably because I have conditioned myself to wear this mask and because I feel the maskless days are numbered and not worth me getting emotionally attached to them. Its true I don't bond with the maskless because they pose a threat to me for the most part because they could be carrying covid or other airborne diseases and yet I am healthy having worn my mask in so many activities outside my home. So I tend to disregard the value of sneezing into arm.. I figure ya might as well wear a mask because of that asymptomatic stuff. All I know is that people that skimp out on not wearing masks and taking taking strict precautions seem to keep getting sick and they are dwindling and even losing cognitive reasoning abilities... it seems like I on the other hand am clear in head and mind and my masking seems to protect me from the ills that are hitting maskless altogether every season. I seem to be the same health wise for having masked and taken all these precautions while many people around me seem to be getting weaker and dwindling every time they get sick.
To me, while sneezing into clothes might possibly address some of the viruses surface contamination it doesn't address the fact measles still linger in the air for two hours amongst the symptomatic and the asymptomatic I also just think people don't necessarily have to sneeze or cough to pass viruses around such as covid and measles..I am thinking viruses actually get passed around by a lot of asymptomatic people or people that hide their symptoms in public ..you know those that wipe their noses on their sleeves when nobody is looking and those that pick their noses in the car..lol
Sneezing into inner elbow helps keep computer screen cleaner I do know that...lol
There but for the grace of the mask goest I,
The Masked Man
P.S I find it reasonable to take twice as many precautions recommended to make up for those that aren’t taking any precautions whatsoever.
