I want to talk about
REHEARSAL:
and how it can lead to a relaxed state of mind especially during times or activities that are stressful.
Here's a stressful event coming up for me:
So my loved on and I are in relative good health and we are maskers. we have to go get my loved one a physical at a doctors office. This is a big deal to me as I hate risking being around maskless sick people and its hard to tell doctors and nurses to mask up and its hard to set people straight and set all that stuff up so I and we feel and are safe. Obviously I am totally stressed about the doctor's visit. soooo...
Here's one solution I use to relieve stress about the upcoming event:
I REHEARSE for the event to relax me! I put on the clothes I think I might wear for doctor office..Ive got a nice jean jacket with big side pockets for a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol I can mist on parts of us and objects when I see fit...maybe I carry an emergency water bottle for my loved one in the other pocket of my jacket for this upcoming trip... so here's how I rehearsed: today I put on my safety mask of course and I simply walked for three or four miles fairly close to the general public all masked up with a nice stetson hat and comfortable shoes to test out how I will feel. I had to see how it feels to walk past the maskless just so I am confident I can tolerate the situation for later.
Typically I usually ride my bike in mask but I have to simulate getting used to being on foot in public so today I walked through shopping centers parking lot and sidewalks just to get used to walking passed the maskless a little. We might have to walk anyway to the doctor's office because car is not legit, up to date with tags and is in the shop.
Anyway REHEARSAL has already helped me feel less stressed and more confident about the doctor's office visit having rehearsed a little what it feels like to wear my mask while walking kind of close to the public today while on foot.. I am more prepared now knowing which shoes won't give me blisters and am even more conditioned by what it feels like walking past the maskless ones not engaging with them but simply practicing ignoring them and walking around them.
In addition to getting a feel for what my journey to Doctor's office might entail, walking in my mask today burned off some stress.. I got home threw clothes in wash, took a nice shower and drink a couple big glasses of water.. made me feel better like I can handle the miles and challenges ahead.
Today I walked around down the street a little like I owned the place mentally even with a cocky swagger in my stride, I walked like confident street smart guy today down the sidewalks passed the herd while listening to music through my earbuds ... I wore my mask proudly for my walk past others.. I owned it, so to speak.
So I think when one is nervous about an upcoming event I'd recommend rehearsing and rehearsal as a remedy to stress like a musician practicing so that he is comfortable and confident and doesn't feel awkward during the performance.
Rehearsing is a little like prepping. Its like breaking out a new pair or shoes, making sure the clothes you choose don't make ya scratch and suffer or making sure the hat one chooses doesn't get blown off by the wind and is the right fit; ya just simulate the future a little bit in advance and get a feel for it. Rehearsing can be like practicing and taking baby steps.
Hope this idea how REHEARSAL and PRACTICE can relieve stress and lead to more of a relaxed state of mind in anticipation of a stressful event ..
Hope this helps somebody,

P.S.
Did another day of rehearsal before big trip to doctors for loved one. Took about 35 minutes to walk to doctors office..I am more confident my loved one can handle this. I found a pair of boots that didn't give me blisters on the walking trip. I must say while these rehearsals help its still nerve-racking wanting doctors and nurses to mask up for my me an my loved one's sake. The rehearsals help but man it just about makes me sick that healthcare has such a problem masking up for their elderly immunocompromised/at risk, sick patients.
The walk there wasn't too bad but there was a lot more traffic on way back around lunchtime... As usual I wore my mask the whole time. Without insulting maskless doctors directly I guess a little nervousness is good because it protects us from those that endanger us and think they know everything. Its hard seeing maskless elderly people hobble out of the doctor's offices from the building today. I just respect playing it safe and masking around microscopic entities where people are sick or people gather because it works for me to mask and there is a new variant out as usual , Me and my loved one haven't caught covid in five years because of my practice... I wish healthcare and in general doctors would learn from my success with masking. All that said, rehearsing takes the edge off the stress a little of dealing with the maskless. I'll be there to protect my masked loved one. I don't leave her side I don't let doctor's or nurses breathe on my masked love one that's for sure.
