New mutations help the H5N1 bird flu virus infect cows but not people
Published Apr 15, 2026

H5N1 bird flu viruses have acquired a molecular trick that makes them more easily infect mammary glands in cattle,

To infect cells, influenza viruses latch on to certain sugars decorating cell surfaces. Some H5N1 viruses have picked up mutations that allow them to grab one such sugar made by cattle but not by humans or birds, researchers report

SIDE-NOTE:
I'm sure this what the study says is true...I'm certainly wary a mutation that can infect another species such as cows or bovine animals more easily.. although it may not infect humans directly right now according to the findings it still seems like a bad sign and just indicates further to me that this virus is indeed mutating and could very well mutate in other ways.

Just the mere fact the virus is mutating means it can and will continue to mutate in ways that may  mean it could get closer to mutate and go human to human. Regardless this virus is mutating and adapting itself on different species...we know that much. I'm no scientist but I'm really thinking this avian flu vcould very well mutate and go human to human ...we shall see.

Maybe the title should read:
"New mutations help the H5N1 bird flu virus infect cows but currently not people... not quite yet anyway." By the way, women have mammary glands and can also produce milk under certain conditions. It's scary this virus is mutating to infect cows more.

This is just terrible as if all the culling of chickens isn't horrifying enough now more problems for our cattle? Oh man this is not looking good for the world. I can't believe the typical network news and politicians are completely numb to this issue. This could really cripple entire world this avian flu amongst poultry and cattle utter destruction and livestock shortage.

Just to counteract the fatalistic view that some things might be beyond our control I humbly ask to inspire hope what are farmers and animal handlers doing in the face of avian's flu existence? What protocols are in place and how can we prepare for this? How can we be proactive with this? In a sense the virus has and continues to adapt its behavior so in what ways have we adapted our behavior in farming and in our backyards?

...oh well, I should be okay because I wear a mask anyway. I don't believe in gambling...  so my mask is on! I'm ready,

Must COMMENT:on the quote he "guts it out vs. Blue Jays, pitches into 6th despite stomach illness"

So I'm just a regular guy a guy who publicly masks to help prevent illness and is a care giver of a 78 year old. I ride six miles every week on my bicycle in my mask with a backpack and pick up a box of local farmers Market from the women's agricultural center. They sit a the box outside.. I don't have to get off my bicycle and I wash my hands and I rinse all vegetables when I get home later...

..all I can say is even though I take a lot of pre-cautions I still hope whoever is at the farmers Market or the women's agricultural center isn't "gutting it out despite any stomach illnesses" you know? I resent the attitude that there is something noble about enduring illness and possibly infecting others that these athletes and sports columnists present. There's nothing glamorous or 'gutsy' about a sick player possibly exposing his loved ones or other team players to what might be a contagious illness...

...I try to protect people I love and encourage people who think they might possibly be sick to sit it out, stay at home, seek medical treatment, wear a mask so you don't expose your contacts or loved ones to something that might be more serious than you imagine and wear a mask in public and at doctors so you aren't exposed to whatever the next people might have in the waiting room or from the doctors and nurses themselves while you are figuring out what is wrong with you.

Nowadays with so many viruses circulating it is  just egotistical and kind of sleazy to not protect others fromm any illness nowadays and seek medical treatment. At least figure out what is wrong with you because its gross to work or play with others when you are ill... Imagine someone sick  handling your food food from the farmers market today.. again I take lots of precautions such as masking and cleaning food before I bring it in my home

...  athletes and sports column writers should learn to behave a certain code of conduct when they feel ill, go home , see a doctor and  should stop bragging... athletes should be good role models instead and display some responsibility when they get sick for the sake of others.. how would they like it if people at the farmers market or women's agricultural center just "gutted it out while they were sick and handled food while sick? of course who knows maybe that's how the player got sick to begin  maybe he got sick dining or at  social gathering eating or something...ugh..

Anyway dear professional athletes,
get some help and seek medical treatment and protect others when you are sick for crying out loud! It's just downright cruel to risk making others sick .. you don't wanna make someone feel like throwing up do ya!? Its just self destructive and endangers others.. you do that to your mom and dad or people you love? You care if others get sick as well?

I'm sorry but who do these people think they are running around sick and doing things on camera sick in public? Have they no pride? Don't they see the connections and how they could bring suffering to others? What is this tough guy macho crap attitude and what does it mean to  " have a lot a guts"?.. evidentylly it takes a lot more guts and courage  than most athletes are displaying to do the right thing, forego personal gratification, and learn to  protect loved ones and your team players from contagious illness. If I see someone coughing or throwing up in their baseball hat I'm certainly gonna run to the other side of the street and far away from them even though I am wearing a mask..  sick people go home and seek medical attention.. stay away from me and my loved ones and stay away from your own loved ones.. I can't stand throwing up or feeling nauseous!

That's a huge problem with people today they work and play while sick with no regard for others and the illness spreads. It's pathetic.

Think about what is important.. take a teacher for example .. education is important.. everybody agrees but it would be insane for a teacher to say" "I'm sick but all these kids need for me to 'gut' this thing out and teach despite I feel like throwing up and might infect the whole room of kids with an illness to bring home to their family. That's why substitute teachers were invented to solve that problem. It's equally ludicrous when ball players, co workers , hospital staff, or people who handle food,  work while sporting a contagious or mysterious illness.

Oh well, I should be okay. I wear a mask so it really shouldn't bother or affect me,
