SUMMARY - The United Kingdom is restricting what foods citizens from the European Union may bring over into the country. This restriction is the result of a rising number of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (otherwise known as Hoof-and-Mouth), a highly-contagious and sometimes fatal animal disease, cases in Europe. The restriction includes sandwiches, cheese, cured meats such as ham, raw meat or milk. The UK had already banned personal imports of cattle, sheep and other ruminants and pork, as well as dairy products from Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and Austria earlier this year in response to confirmed outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in those countries.

Off Topic Discussion / So a tick got me...
« on: March 29, 2025, 10:30:16 am »
I know that I shouldn't be ashamed or embarrassed.

Yet I feel ashamed and embarrassed.

I discovered a tick on me today (March 29, 2025) and I'm pretty sure that it probably got there yesterday while doing outdoor work. It wasn't crawling; It was stuck on me.

I now have to deal with the possibility of getting Lyme Disease.

Normally, I'm careful about checking myself after working outside. I wasn't careful yesterday.

Therefore, consider this a warning: Always check for ticks. Even if you're outside for a little while... Check for ticks. Even if you only did "a little" gardening or "a little" outdoor work or went for "a brief" walk... Check for ticks.

Don't be me and regret not checking yourself.

If you want, share your own "a tick got me" stories here. I'll put updates here on my own situation. Hopefully, the story turns out to be good and it's just a false alarm. However...

SUMMARY - The parents of the child who died in Texas from measles appeared in an interview where they continued to urge others to avoid vaccinating their kids.

COMMENTARY - To be fair, they only lost 20% of their children to measles...  ::)

SUMMARY - A new study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration finds that HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) survives the aging process used in creating cheese made from raw milk. This contradicts prior assumptions that the aging process killed pathogens such as HPAI.

« on: March 15, 2025, 09:34:12 am »
TOPIC SUMMARY - Please post events here that are about Listeria involving the United States for the calendar year 2025 here. If a singular event becomes significant enough, such as a massive outbreak, we'll address that to see if it needs its own topic.

POST SUMMARY - The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) advises consumers not to drink Brookvale Pines Farm raw milk with “best if used by” dates through March 22, 2025, as it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. This advisory comes after the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Markets, and Food notified DHHS that a cow at the farm was diagnosed with listeria infection.

SUMMARY - The antiviral drug Paxlovid may not offer much protection against COVID-related hospitalizations or deaths for vaccinated older adults after all. Paxlovid didn’t lower COVID hospital or death risk for vaccinated adults ages 65-74. It may still benefit high-risk or immunocompromised patients, experts say. The study was recently published in JAMA Network Open.

Other Viruses And Diseases / E. Coli - China / Hong Kong - 2025 Events
« on: February 23, 2025, 10:44:41 am »
NOTE - Please use this thread for any E. Coli-related events that occur in China (which includes Hong Kong). I understand the political tensions of putting the two together; This board is about diseases, not "What is a country and what isn't?" If the two really need to be separated, that issue is for another day.

SUMMARY - The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has issued an urgent advisory today (23rd February), urging the public to refrain from consuming a specific batch of raw milk cheese imported from France due to a potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Retailers and distributors are instructed to cease the sale of this product immediately.

COMMENTARY - Another dairy product recalled for safety reasons because it was made from raw milk? You don't say. And it was made by Perrin Vermot? Didn't France recall some of their stuff in January? Huh. What an amazing coincidence...

Bird Flu (HPAI) / USDA approves Bird Flu vaccine... For Birds
« on: February 17, 2025, 03:43:12 pm »
SUMMARY - The United States Department of Agriculture has conditionally approved an avian flu vaccine for use in chickens. Zoetis, the manufacturer, has made similar vaccines before, such as one to protect California Condors. The approval may signal a shift in strategy for the United States, which has traditionally killed all chickens in a flock if HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) was detected.
