Passengers on Balmoral cruise ship confirm outbreak of gastroenteritis
The cruise ship scheduled to visit for Up-Helly-Aa is reported to have suffered an outbreak of gastroenteritis affecting as many as 200 people on board.Meanwhile, rumours had been circulating in Shetland that there had also been an outbreak of norovirus on board the ship, which can carry up to 1,230 passengers.
(In May last year, operators of the cruise ship Costa Favolosa sparked fury by allowing thousands of passengers to come ashore in Shetland despite there having been an outbreak of a sickness bug on board.)

COMMENT/NOTE SEMANTICS OF CERTAIN AGENCIES: somewhat interesting to note certain agencies such as this yoga class will openly say they are cancelled "due to illness" while other agencies less open to honesty, disingenuous or reality are more liable to say they are "cancelled due to quorum" such as government, city, or county agencies who cancel meetings as in the aforementioned previous reply posted above this one.
It seems some organizations say "due to to illness" while others say "due to lack of quorum" which probably signifies one party's willingness to admit of illness and another party's denial to declare they are in a state of weakness and ill.
I personally believe it is wiser for agencies and organizations to freely admit illness and disclose the true causes of a lack of quorum whenever they can... as I think honesty is the best policy and the truth of why people can't attend an important event is important to know so that we as a society may better learn from, gain knowledge, and become enlightened by learning about the illness or lack of attendance that has prevented us from our endeavors to attend that special or important community event. Ignorance is not bliss when it come to illness or the withheld reasons for lack of quorum in an organized community that shares common interests and visions with one another. Regardless, Don't hide or be shamed by what ails you or your loved ones! Don't hide or be ashamed why you can't attend meaningful meetings or groups you dearly wanted to attend!

I am speculating if anytime we see “Lack of quorum” that we can more than likely assume the event was cancelled due to illness.
Society has a hard time admitting when they are sick and so that is why I think they will adopt this ‘lack of quorum’ phrase in the face of their denial of illness and when outbreaks occurring.
Methinks society has a hard time admitting they are ill and in a state of weakness. In the past militaries often never revealed when they were ill out of fear they would be regarded as weak. Societies and the community at large also have a hard time not denying and not downplaying the true state of their condition when they are ill…
I challenge and invite The reader to call and determine what the true causes are for “the lack of quorum” and determine if most cancellations are due to illness as I suspect they often are.. that is of course if the agency will even admit to outbreaks of illness.
To my recollection we have rarely used the phrase “due to lack of quorum” as often as I currently see in these post pandemic days…
following is just one day of a page of random list of events cancelled due to “lack of quorum” that I googled… I must say by googling “cancelled due to lack of quorum” one gets a lot more hits than googling “cancelled due to illness” .
.. the following list is too exhausting and numerous for me to personally determine true causes of "lack of quorum" but it is worth analyzing to see if this daily "lack of quorum" corresponds and matches rates of illness data in that area.
Why would so many events be cancelled and what are the odds of this not being due illness given the data of event might correspond exactly when times of current flu outbreaks are occuring?
.. they don’t state why there is a lack of quorum… so again this lack of attendance could be due to a number of causes however I highly suspect and have reason to believe simply based on general observance of human behavior that a good portion could be due to illness… I encourage the reader to determine cause of lack of quorum for themselves…

SHELBY — Lawmakers in Shelby will not meet Monday night.
Slated as Shelby City Council’s first gathering of 2026, the meeting was cancelled on Monday afternoon. Stacey Gunder, an administrative assistant for the city, emailed the public notice around 3:15 p.m.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances in an environment of active communicable illnesses, the Shelby City Council meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. this evening (Monday) is cancelled,” the notice said.
