Today, a suspected case of highly pathogenic avian influenza, a livestock infectious disease, was confirmed at a poultry farm in Kanegasaki Town, Iwate Prefecture (the 20th case in Japan this season).
In response to this, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will convene a meeting of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Avian Influenza Prevention Headquarters to confirm future response policies.
The farm in question has refrained from moving poultry since the farmer notified them.
We ask for your cooperation in strictly refraining from reporting on-site, as this could lead to the spread of the disease and violate the farmer's privacy.
Kanegasaki Town, Iwate Prefecture Japan
Farming situation: Approximately 560,000 chickens (layers)
2. Background
(1) On Friday, February 20, 2026, Iwate Prefecture received a report from a farm in Kanegasaki Town and conducted an on-site inspection of the farm.
(2) On the same day, a simple test for avian influenza was conducted on the poultry in question, which revealed that the results were positive.
(3) On Saturday, February 21, genetic testing was conducted on the poultry at the farm, and the results confirmed that the poultry were suspected cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Bird flu antibodies found in cow in the Netherlands, a first outside of U.S.
Dead cat led to discovery, but officials stress no further spread of H5N1 has been detected
24 Jan 2026
A dairy cow in the Netherlands appears to have been infected with H5N1, the first report of this deadly avian influenza virus having spread to cattle outside of the United States.
According to a detailed letter the Dutch agriculture minister sent to the country’s parliament today, a cat on a dairy farm in the province of Friesland died from H5N1 last month, which led veterinary authorities to sample blood and milk from cattle at the farm. One cow had antibodies to the virus in its milk, but no samples tested positive for the virus itself. “There are also no signs of avian influenza spreading to other dairy farms,” the minister wrote.

Suspected bird flu at Chemnitz Zoo confirmed
DieSachsen News 31.01.2026
Avian influenza has been detected at Chemnitz Zoo. All birds have been tested and the enclosures secured. What happens now at the zoo?
The suspicion of bird flu at Chemnitz Zoo has been confirmed. This was announced by the city following investigations by the Friedrich Loeffler Institute. As announced, the zoo will remain closed until Monday (February 2). The city will then provide information on further steps.
Two dead chickens were found in a duck pond at the zoo this week. As a result, all of the 300 or so birds living there were tested for the pathogen. Some of the animals were housed in pens. The bird enclosures were also secured.
This is the second major case of bird flu at a zoo in Saxony this winter. In December, Leipzig Zoo killed all of its Dalmatian pelicans after two of the birds died. The zoo had also taken further hygiene measures to contain the animal disease.

Israel reports bird flu outbreak on farm in north, WOAH says
06 Jan 2026 06:01:25 GMT9
The outbreak, the first in a year in Israel, was detected in a flock of 2,000 ducks in the village of Sde Yaakov
PARIS: Israel reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu on a farm in the north of the country, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) said on Tuesday.
The outbreak, the first in a year in Israel, was detected in a flock of 2,000 ducks in the village of Sde Yaakov, causing the death of 90 birds, the Paris-based WOAH said, citing a report from the Israeli authorities. The remaining birds were subsequently culled as a precaution.
The spread of avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, has raised concerns among governments and the poultry industry after it ravaged flocks around the world in recent years, disrupting supply, fueling higher food prices and raising the risk of human transmission.

Race to contain suspected bird flu outbreak among Thames Valley swans
Volunteer workers say increasing case numbers and dozens of dead birds raise fears spread is wider than recorded
The animal charity Swan Support said 46 dead swans had been found in the borough of Windsor and Maidenhead since 17 January, along with a further 26 in Newbury. Two swans were discovered dead in Windsor on Thursday, with three more found on Friday in the Berkshire village of Hurley.
Wendy Hermon, the operations director at Swan Support, said the birds had been found “spinning around in circles [and] bleeding from the eyes”, as well as appearing lethargic, prompting suspicion that bird flu might be the cause.
The H5N1 strain of bird flu has devastated bird populations across the UK. The virus is highly infectious, with scientists saying that a single bird can infect up to 100 others, and that it can be transmitted through feces, mucus, blood and saliva.
