Salmonella illnesses linked to contact with backyard poultry
Investigation Update: Salmonella Outbreak, April 2026
Apr. 23, 2026
For Everyone
Public health officials in several states are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella illnesses linked to contact with backyard poultry. Any backyard poultry can carry Salmonella germs that can make you sick. Always take steps to stay healthy around your flock.
LINK:
https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/outbreaks/saintpaul-04-26/investigation.html
NOTE/COMMENT: They don't even have to consume it to get Salmonella... They are getting Salmonella by simply handling live poultry,,
I am but a layperson on the matter but I don't understand why this is even happening because shouldn't farmers be masking and using gloves and goggles anyway because of potential avian flu? It just surprises me people aren't already taking precautions against avian flu because if they were I assume the same precautions might ward off Salmonella as well.
"The precautions for avian flu and Salmonella
are highly compatible, with good hygiene, thorough cooking , and avoiding contact with sick birds or their feces being effective against both. Key actions include washing hands frequently, wearing gloves when handling poultry/bird feeders, and preventing wild birds from interacting with backyard flocks"
"Public Health Actions
CDC advises everyone to take steps to stay healthy around backyard poultry. CDC and state partners are working with hatcheries and stores that sell poultry to educate new poultry owners and control the spread of Salmonella at hatcheries."
P.S. I'm always making the same point over and over: By taking precautions such as masking, washing hands and clothes, etc. we wind up protecting ourselves not just from one virus but from a multitude of viruses. When you mask, you wind up protecting yourself from numerous airborne illness and airborne diseases simultneously all at the same time.

Multi-State Outbreak Of Drug-Resistant Salmonella Sickening Young Kids
By iHeartRadio
Apr 28, 2026
A multi-state salmonella outbreak linked to backyard poultry is raising alarms among federal health officials, with some infections showing resistance to common antibiotics.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed at least 34 people across 13 states have been sickened by the same strain of salmonella, all traced to contact with backyard birds. Thirteen of those patients required hospitalization. No deaths have been reported so far.
Illnesses were reported between Wednesday (February 26) and Tuesday (March 31). The patients range in age from less than one year old to 78 years old, with a median age of just 12. More than 40% of those infected are children younger than five.

Lehigh Valley food safety report: remove mouse carcasses, droppings; filthy rags won’t clean; tepid chicharrón
Here are the food safety inspection reports from Lehigh and Northampton counties, conducted the week of March 8.
Each week, we highlight the inspection reports provided through the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The department performs the inspections in many areas, while some municipalities such as Allentown and Bethlehem conduct their own inspections.
All establishments are inspected once per year, and inspectors may return several more times if the initial inspection is not passed or complaints are received. (For more information on how food safety inspections are conducted in Pennsylvania, view a list of FAQs.)
As noted by the Department of Agriculture, the reports are merely a “snapshot” in time, and they may not be representative of the restaurant’s long-term condition. Many of the violations are corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the establishment.

COMMENT:
Years ago, my loved one got Hepatitis A along with 32 other people from her dentist and was sick for almost a year and said she could'n keep anything down but ice cream, lemonade, or chicken broth and lost a ton of weight and then she was weak for a year after that. They didn't know it was from a dentist until it was confirmed like a year later in the newspaper a long time afterwards. That was before the days of cellphones and internet. She could barely walk.. had to drop out of school for awhile went to hospital was the only way they could figure out what was wrong with her. The "a" in Hepatitis A stands for 'a'wful.

Cheese Recalled due to Listeria
By Bill Marler on February 21, 2026
Made Fresh Salads, Inc. of Bay Shore, NY is recalling assorted flavors of cream cheese because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The cream cheese was distributed in Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and New York City area by direct delivery to retail stores and distributors. Products are distributed in 5 lb. white plastic tubs with a Made Fresh Salads label. The flavors being recalled are as follows with expiration dates through February 27, 2026, marked in the bottom left corner of the label.
The recall was the result of a routine sampling program by the company which revealed that a part of the mixer used to manufacture finished products was contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The company has ceased production using the mixer in question and removed it from service.

Long-Running Listeriosis Outbreaks Highlight Persistent Contamination Risk in Packaged Salads
FEBRUARY 21, 2026
“Both outbreaks highlight the ongoing potential for L. monocytogenes infections as a result of consuming contaminated packaged salads, especially for high-risk consumers,” a CDC spokesperson who did not want to be identified told Infectious Disease Special Edition"
Two genetically unrelated multistate outbreaks of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to packaged salads from two different producers resulted in at least 30 illnesses, 27 hospitalizations, and four deaths over an eight-year period, according to a report published in Emerging Infectious Diseases
