SUMMARY - In the country of the United States, cattle in two states (Texas and Kansas) have become infected with HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza), otherwise known as "Bird Flu." This is the first known infection of cattle ever although other types of livestock has been infected with HPAI before. The milk supply has not been endangered. There are several safeguards in ensuring that milk from infected cattle never reaches the retail market. Infected cattle do not need to be "depopulated" (killed) as opposed to other types of livestock, such as chickens and turkeys.
