USA, Cattle Outbreak of HPAI - Multiple States - 2024
« on: April 27, 2024, 04:33:09 pm »
SUMMARY - (Country: USA) The state of Colorado has become the ninth state to report a herd that has been infected with HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza). No other information about the herd (such as the size of the herd or its location) was disclosed. Officials believe that the disease is spreading from cow to cow, as opposed from birds to cows.

NOTE - Instead of introducing individual threads about the USA Cattle outbreak of HPAI, I have started this topic for myself and others to place them in for one easy location in order to document the spread and severity of it. There will be no alterations of prior topics that are about this situation.

SUMMARY - The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has performed tests of beef that is infected with HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) and has found that cooking the meat 145 degrees Fahrenheit (63 degrees Celsius) should neutralize and kill the virus, should it be in the meat at all. This temperature is the equivalent of ordering the meat cooked "medium."

SUMMARY - A new study entitled "Spillover of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 in Dairy Cattle" has confirmed that the strain of HPAI that has plagued cattle and people across multiple states in the United States has adapted itself to allow for mammal-to-mammal transmission. The strain has adapted itself to infect mammary glands with the virus showing up in large quantities in raw milk. Pasteurization of milk has been shown to render milk infected with this virus to be safe to drink.

SUMMARY - Milk production has declined for 12 straight months compared to production from one year ago, according to a report from the Agricultural Department. Factors for the decreased production includes the effects from the HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) outbreak affecting dairy cattle, climate change and a shortage of replacement cows.
