Just to briefly note some of the approximate factors involved  and vast amount of cases Steve and Data Report have been so good to keep us informed with...

...sometimes there have been as many as 14 cases in one week here mentioned. We can only assume there are many unaccounted cases occurring that don't always get reported promptly or noted by news or press

Some cases involving 50 animals other cases sometimes involving 25,000 creatures at once and even more etc.

These cases involve herds and flocks and a variety of species.

The cases are all located in  different areas from one another not just occurring in one part of a state or country.

Also note that this is in commercial as well as backyard livestock, domesticated animals , zoo animals and many animals out in wild.

To see these events all  pasted into a monthly calendar and posted on a map puts the scope of this horrible thing in perspective and is quite alarming.

These reports are very important (thank you Steve, Data Report and forum members for your continual efforts and work at keeping us informed on this)

SUMMARY - The Board of Commissioners in both Mercer and Darke County in the state of Ohio have passed an emergency declaration of government support on February 18, 2025, due to the ongoing bird flu outbreak. Darke County experienced its first case of HPAI on Dec. 24, 2024, while Mercer County had its first case on Jan. 10, 2025, according to the resolution documents. According to the declarations, both counties are requesting support from the State and Federal Governments to assist “assist in the containment, eradication, and recovery efforts related to the disease.'

COMMENTARY - So much irony in a red state asking the Federal Government for assistance in combating the spread of a deadly virus... Must resist temptation...

Rats (and mice) News

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today added eight more H5N1 avian flu confirmations to its list of detections in mammals, including rats for the first time. Officials have previously confirmed the virus in mice found on affected farms.

Masked Man's COMMENTARY: (a layperson's perspective):

To me this is the 'bigtime'... rats! The ultimate vector of diseases.. They get around. They can climb and get through tiny holes and they hide and are magnets to food. They chew on stuff leaving saliva sticky stuff everywhere and their bedding is also dangerous.  They  leave feces and urine tracts behind everywhere and they reproduce like crazy. When poisoned they even chew through house's water pipes opening a tiny leak so they can drink more water leaving a mess that is also highly dangerous with disease infested areas. You don't want to breathe in the areas rats and mice have been in period.

This little critter called that rat along with mice is historically known for helping along the bubonic plague I believe.
I got one word now: "exponential".

Having a bakery and an older house Ive dealt with a few mice and even a couple rats every few seasons I patch up a hole.. they leave a trail that's usually not to hard to find... they come out at night and you can hear them.  they burrow alongside plumbing sometimes get through holes that must be patched up by various means ... you don't want to breathe in the dust when you got your head near the floor patching holes up.. rats and mice like to invade other animal's food and water sources as well.

...WEAR A MASK! They mostly  get in the kitchen and contaminate food and walk across dinnerware and get into drawers from behind walls... I do have some stray cats outdoors. I feed the stray cats outdoors. If they multiply and I have cat problems outside then that's fine with me. I would rather have a bunch of cats near my house than rodents ..lol

...I'm not going to feed any more birds at bird feeder.. I hope the feral cats that live under our porch  keep the rodents from entering house and I hope none of the rodents are sick meanwhile Ive got two indoor cats that stay indoors! My friendly layperson advice is Keep your pets indoors ... statistically indoor pets live longer than outdoor pets as bird flu is apparently proving even more so.

That's the Masked Man's Caveat for now! Not to scare anybody so that they freeze up and become useless but I'd definitely be concerned about rats and mice carrying avian flu .. rats and mice with bird flu means more than likely exponential rapid spread of disease. I believe in Masks and not simply relying alone on technology or the latest serum to protect you.

Its up to each person but I highly recommend masks when working directly with all creatures great and small. Some things are beyond our control namely microscopic entities. I like the mask because it gives me a choice as to when and what I breathe in around me. I personally don't like risking airborne diseases and when working outside I find I am wary of wildlife as it is everywhere around my house. I personally prefer to wear a mask outside my home for personal safety reasons. I don't want to o risk airborne illnesses at this point in my time so I take precautions. It actually makes me feel good being safe and Ive gotten use to this practice of wearing a mask outside my home and washing my hands when I get inside. I highly recommend masking just to be on the safe side.

I feel funny giving advice but then again I'd like to see some more masked people out there like my self playing it safe and playing it smart.

Be careful.

It would be interesting to note how the rats got the virus. If it is rat-to-rat transmission, it is yet another troubling sign that the HPAI threat is worsening.

And this point Nothing would surprise me, Steve, I wouldn't be surprised at all if rats and mice have been partly responsible for the spread of bird flu and play a role in contributing to the bird flu problems amongst several creatures including poultry.  Rats and mice are reknown for being around farms  feeding off chicken feed and hanging around poultry plants in fact its a common problem for farms to be infested with rodents to my limited knowledge. Ive lived near a few farms and once next to a poultry farm where mice were all over the place. They blame birds but also there's bats in barns.. to put it bluntly bats hang upside and eat and lick themselves while hanging upside down in barns dropping  food they don't eat and droppings that other animals reside in. The sky is the limit as to how these diseases could escalate. so many variables and possibilities as to how a water source could get tainted as well if avian flu spreads through water.

How do ya keep a rat or mouse out of the livestock’ food ? mice are always around cattle.. also half of America gets their fertilizer from wastewater treatment plants. I don't doubt birds spread bird flu but man mice and rodents definitely don't have boundaries either. So many opportunities for avian flu. its pretty scary no doubt. Its almost impossible to think rats and mice wouldn't be the first to catch bird flu considering.

All that said I guess bird flu is contracted through water and therefore saliva and perhaps urine and fece stick combinations..

... so in theory maybe avian flu is transmission  'saliva/wet animal byproduct to animal". So maybe its different than a completely airborne virus? I have more questions as well. I know they thought Malaria was human to human for awhile but then they discovered that a mosquito would bite a guy that had malaria and then bit another person in that vicinity giving them malaria. So that's not person to person but it almost is in a sense because of the mosquito. Maybe bird flu is like that in that the water that is shared has tiny bacteria or the chicken sheds and gives a person eye conjectuvitus or that person breathes it in... I dunno.. Is bird flu a bacteria virus that can be spread airborne to many different species?

I am confused and have many questions as well as to how it get transmitted. I keep thinking it is like a bacteria that can be breathed in and therefore I don't see how a human with bird flu  couldn't infect another human with this bacteria.

Correct me if I am far from the truth here but the impression I get is that I am led to believe it is a virus that sort of lives in water and is a form of influenza going through animal membranes  (mostly transmitted mouth and nose/snout... there's a lot of foot/hand/claw to mouth stuff in animals going on.. funny but true animals sit/perch on everything and therefore their behinds also spread a lot of adhesive like substances onto surfaces where other animals are not adverse to sniffing and tasting and even consuming with membranes that deliver all these germs to and fro from that scat area as well ) also affecting lungs therefore I assume it goes through membranes and can come back out through breath vapor or water droplets or body excretions that contaminate surfaces that can be exhaled  or  simply contracted from the surfaces from the infected animal(s) to other animals.

...I'm totally speculating here and would love to here a better formulated explanation myself.

It does say on the internet:
"avian A/H5N1 influenza viruses can acquire the capacity for airborne transmission between mammals without recombination in an intermediate host"

..so in a nutshell I guess bird flu is a form of influenza that in the recent past has been proven deadly killing half its subjects an it appears to be jumping species to species at a tremendous pace not limiting itself to birds or just people that work with birds in tiny secluded countries anymore. Yeah its definitely  a "troubling sign". Nothing like this has ever occurred in my lifetime.

We get messages like:

"Avian influenza is an influenza type A virus that occurs naturally in wild aquatic birds, including ducks, geese and gulls. Mild forms of avian influenza (known as low pathogenic avian influenza, or LPAI) are routinely found in wild birds and don't cause serious illness"
&
The total number of human bird flu cases in the U.S. is 68, with most of the cases (64) involving people who work with dairy herds, on poultry farms and in poultry culling operations due to an outbreak. People can be infected with bird flu when the virus gets into their eyes, nose, or mouth, or is inhaled.

....Then everyday I check this site and see a colossal amount of animals from a variety of species dying out.. the list just grows and grows and so when it they say it is now in rats and mice I think holy moly its like human species is the only species left to infect to be honest to me its wise to assume we are next. That's too many animals and different species. I rhetorically ask if these were humans would it then get enough attention to the general public and some of our delegators or regulators in society? The animals dying by massive numbers just hits so close to home that it is impossible for me to not feel anything like concern for my own safety when noting the amount of animal lives thus far lost.

I am alarmed by the number of deaths (of fellow creatures on this earth) as of lately to bird flu but I am even more alarmed by the lack of public media or attention it gets from the public right now... so out of touch are people with animals .. we are totally herdlike and flock like...that is to say we share the same behavior the same facilities the same holes in the earth to go the bathroom in public ,.. many if us flock together to eat... we fill stadiums and coliseums up packed with people like sardines .. its as if people somehow think they are above the animals or so different from other animals that none of this can happen to their species which is most peculiar indeed!

While I am not an expert whatsoever and have never devoted myself to a lifelong studies it just doesnt feel or look right and while I don't have any scientific findings, it just looks like its mutating and just the fact all those animals are dead and so many different kinds of animals carrying bird flu... I can say there have been instances in history where rats and mice have carried diseases and although there are no scientific basis that human to human contact is occuring I feel pretty confident based on sheer number of animals infected and dead that we are in trouble and should take a great means of precautions in the face of this. There's too many things going on here with bird flu and the risk .. well its death. Its not the chance of getting things we need to worry about as much as the stakes.. while the chances of catching it might be low the problem is that if ne does catch it there chance of a good life afterwards is pretty low. If it doesnt cause death its going to maim or create disability.. nobody walks away from bird flu like the common cold. I can say that as well for covid, influenza, pneumonia and many if the other airborne illnesses people underestimate. With all these illnesses on the table and actually appearing to be quite prevalent these days I have very little qualms about advising people to take cover and go ahead and take many precautions such as masking... how can one go wrong arguing for more safety preactins and tools!? My conscience is clear insofar as suggesting people take advantage of a masked way of life along with disinfecting surfaces before bringing stuff into their homes to eat upon. What's the worst that can happen if more people mask and take precautions? Masks might be uncomfortable but airborne diseases are more uncomfortable.. nt to mention wearing the mask for me simply allows me to live with less fearful.. and that's nice..less fear because I am safer is a happier more fulfilled life for me.

Anyway that's my line of thinking and the way I live.. I think those a=herds and flocks of animals are really dead and so I accept that and I try to live accordingly and sensibly to what I observe when I look at certain data and certain news that I think is worthy of attention. I am also pretty confident these numbers and quantities prove something and this problem is real and not a figment of my imagination or a thing to not worry or be concerned about. Sometimes unfortunate things happen in life and many people will react in different ways. A multitude of people no doubt will not want to face up to realities. The masses might be in a form of dennial as it is natural to not want to change lifestyles or habits or social customs. This is painful for most  people. I am not like that. I am unique because I am more independent from people .. I have had experiences with asthma and allergies as a child when my peers didn't ... and I simply have a different psychological makeup and strengths than others have that help me enjoy thinking about problems such as how to survive today's challenges. I have an imagination that aids inquiry and helps me see things and I also have a respect for all the liberal arts which free the mind and allow it to think freely.. science is one of those liberal arts as I have a deep respect for deduction and induction and hypothesis and seeking after truth...

I'm definitely keeping my mask on... I wanna live to tell the tale!  :)

SUMMARY - The San Antonio Zoo has closed three bird exhibits due to the threat of HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza). A deceased wild black vulture that was found on zoo grounds and it has returned a 'non-negative' test result for HPAI [Ed. Note - This seems to imply that the test couldn't be conclusively ruled as 'negative'].

Salisbury Zoo is installing additional mesh netting over bird exhibits this week as part of its ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of avian influenza.Feb 20, 2025 Updated Feb 21, 2025

Masked Man comment: This is the best news so far because there were no reports of bird flu and yet the Salisbury Zoo has taken upon themselves to  increase their bird flu precautions with new safety measures prior to any report of infections. This is the way all zoos should behave...actually trying to prevent it before it happens! excellent! (I believe they are also wearing PPE personal protection equipment and taking sanitation measures when feeding and caring for the birds also noted within this news article)

I hope their precautions work and I applaud these efforts on the part of zoos trying to prevent bird flu rather than just waiting for it to happen before putting measures in place. Let's hope they are taking enough measures and that it does indeed prevent bird flu in their zoo.
