ENC facility hit with avian flu
CAFOs, Environmental, Sound Rivers, Tar-Pamlico Watershed, Water Quality
Posted on March 12th, 2026
According to Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture confirmed an avian flu outbreak at a commercial egg-laying facility in Hyde County, affecting more than 3 million birds.
The department did not release the name of the facility, citing state law: “ … We do not release farm name and address for animal disease cases. We only identify the county in which the case occurred,” NCDA Assistant Director Heather Overton wrote in an email.
“However, Rose Acre Farms in Pantego is the only commercial egg-laying facility we know of in Hyde County that is large enough to house more than 3 million birds,” Katey said.
This is the second time in recent years that Rose Acre Farms has been hit by the avian flu. In January 2025, a similar-sized outbreak required the facility to kill 3.3 million birds.

Bird Flu Strikes 8 NYC Live Markets, One In Florida
Published on March 14, 2026
Highly pathogenic bird flu has quietly spread into another cluster of live-bird markets, with federal data and state alerts flagging nine new detections nationwide. Eight are in New York City...
Overall risk to the general public is still considered low, but people who work in these markets or regularly handle live birds are at the front of the exposure line.

COMMENT:
Whenever someone says "risk to the general public is still considered low" I cringe a little thinking how do they distinguish the general public from people who work in these markets or regularly handle live birds... aren't people in these markets and those who handle birds part of the general public?

Bird flu outbreak confirmed in Kent County flock, Michigan
Mar 16, 2026
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has confirmed an outbreak of bird flu among a commercial poultry flock in Kent County.
This is just the second outbreak found in Michigan this year. Infections often wane in the winter, but the virus is still around despite the cold temperatures. State Veterinarian Nora Wineland says infections can rise this spring if bird owners don’t take precautions.
Thanks to the prompt reporting by the flock owner, we can respond quickly. The faster the disease is reported, the faster we can take action to prevent its spread.”

COMMENT:
Who'd of imagined we are now tracking trucks carrying dead ducks! They are transporting ducks with avian flu across states in trucks... this is all a bad sign. As with all the posts in this tracking thread there remains high-alert pandemic concern..scientists are monitoring the virus closely, as its continued evolution has spurred concern about its potential to cross into humans, making it a high-alert pandemic concern.
PERSONNEL NOTE:
there have been so much bird flu evolving and spreading I have been far from able to cite them all in this thread.
...Given the sheer quantity of infections, this is very scary and seems only a matter of time that this flu will jump human to human considering the other species and mammals it has occurred in as of lately. I can see why the scientists are concerned. The sheer number of avian flu infections should be horrifying to me. Ive never heard of anything of this calibre occurring in all the years Ive lived. It's got to make ya think and masses of people should seriously be considering precautions such as masking simply because that's a huge number of sick and dead creatures in the wild and in livestock environment all of which is in relative close contact to people.

Cleanup underway at Hyde County egg-laying facility following bird flu outbreak
Published March 23, 2026
A massive avian flu cleanup is underway in Eastern North Carolina, but local environmental groups say the process remains shrouded in mystery. Sound Rivers’ Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman took to the skies recently for an aerial look at a Hyde County egg-laying facility following a major outbreak.
While state officials haven't named the site, Zimmerman says her flight over Rose Acre Farms confirmed the location, revealing long litter piles and what appears to be a mass grave for more than three million birds.
The Department of Agriculture is not required to disclose the specific facility, but Zimmerman warns the environmental stakes are high. If those waste piles are left uncovered for more than fifteen days, they could violate state regulations. There are also growing concerns that runoff from the site could dump high levels of nutrients and pathogens into local waters, triggering toxic algal blooms.
