Avian Flu Outbreak Affects Over 2.3 Million Birds in Lancaster County

Feb 6, 2026

A significant avian influenza outbreak has hit Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, with state officials reporting that approximately 2.3 million birds have been affected across multiple flocks.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture confirmed that the virus has been detected in two commercial operations and seven backyard flocks throughout the county. The majority of the affected birds were connected to a "commercial table egg layer" operation, where more than 1.5 million hens were depopulated last week after confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

413,000 Kansas birds impacted by worst bird flu outbreak nationwide in 2026

by: Matthew Self

Posted: Jan 12, 2026
TOPEKA (KSNT) – Kansas is one of the hardest-hit states in the nation by bird flu at the outset of 2026 as poultry operations are placed in quarantine.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports on its website that Kansas is suffering from the nation’s largest current outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza as of Jan. 12. In total, over 413,000 birds from commercial and backyard flocks are being impacted by HPAI in 2026.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture reports that HPAI, also known as bird flu, is spread primarily by wild birds migrating across the country such as snow geese and Canada geese. HPAI symptoms in birds include diarrhea, lack of coordination, nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing, low energy, reduced egg production and sudden death, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

The first time since July 2024 that avian flu has been detected in a commercial flock in Colorado. However, four backyard flocks in Morgan, Logan and Larimer counties have tested positive in the past two months."

("The numbers do not account for bird flu confirmations in wild birds, which are recorded in a separate database. Two high-profile wild bird die-offs in late 2025 were linked to the virus, including roughly 200 Canada geese found dead in Iowa and a dozen or more swans in Orlando's Lake Eola Park").

Published February 13, 2026

The City of Lubbock continues to remind citizens not to touch wild birds, as officials report having collected more than 2,000 dead birds by the end of January. Here are avian flu facts to be aware of and ways to keep yourself and your pets healthy.

Avian flu continues to spread among wild birds in and around Lubbock and city officials have said the outbreak may not have peaked yet.

According to Lubbock City Manager Jarrett Atkinson, by the end of January, the city had collected more than 2,000 dead birds.

"We're being told it probably hasn't peaked. There's still another week or so to go before it peaks," he said.

Bird flu flockdown? 5-star chicken hotel forced to close due to outbreak

By Talker News Feb 13, 2026

The owner of a five-star hotel for chickens says she fears for the future of her business after three months of a bird flu "flockdown."

Katriona Shovlin, 33, who runs the luxury bird boarding business Hen Weekend in Upchurch, Kent, had to shut down in October after news of a bird flu outbreak nearby.

COMMENT: I was just looking at avian flu outbreaks randomly and lo and behold I found this article and its in the same county I live in! This hits close to home!.. it says "she got a shocking call from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) announcing a lockdown as there was a confirmed bird flu case nearby." I have been watching the news vigilantly for this stuff because I have irresponsible neighbors who have trouble keeping their roosters and chickens from straying.

I haven't seen any public reports of avian flu in October being reported in Watauga county. I'm looking that up right now and so it appears Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs didn't report this publicly to any newspapers from what I am seeing.

Of course I mask but that won't necessarily protect the feral cats I take care of. Sooner or later again avian flu is going to hit everybody's neighborhoods no doubt.

It reads Kat said: “I was worried because I was getting text updates and the cases seemed to keep getting closer to home. There was a huge outbreak only a mile away." So that means there is avian flu in my county now!. Ive got to be extra careful as I always am when I take my indoor dog out to go the bathroom. Ive got  to make sure my little dog doesn't graze upon or get hold of any bird, poultry,  or cat scat when I briefly walk him in our backyard on his leash.

I swear I'm looking up avian flu in Watauga County NC and I can't find a thing on it!? I gotta dig deep and contact that girl named Kat to find out what her sources are!? Where's the huge outbreak of avian flu in Watauga County occurring that Kat is referring to?

Wait a minute this is a story from Upchurch Kent which is in England.. What's a story in England doing in a local North Carolina newspaper!? Well, Its a small world after all..My county is so dumb they wouldn't know if Avian flu flew in anyway! There's probably avian flu in my county.. I'm prepared aBesides what can they do about it!? My county and nobody is prepared for bird flu anyway... As always am ..mask is already on ... There's probably a North Carolina Watauga County story in Upchurch Kent England right now for all I know! It's best to simply live as if it is already happening. I guess that was just a local newspaper article to warn me that Avian flu is going to hit my county too and that it may already be happening!

I live as if its happening because its gonna happen sooner or later,
