Measles outbreak prompts health alert in World Cup host Jalisco, Mexico...

ZAPOPAN – The Mexican state of Jalisco on Thursday issued a health alert and mandated the use of face masks in schools as a measles outbreak hit the state capital, a key host city for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Measles outbreak prompts health alert in World Cup host Jalisco, Mexico

Public school students and teachers wear mandatory face masks amid a measles outbreak, during a ceremony at their school in Guadalajara, Mexico, Thursday, Feb. 5, 2026.

Jalisco is the epicenter of the outbreak, with 1,163 cases confirmed this year and 2,092 suspected cases, according to Mexico's government.

The measles outbreak in Mexico began last year in the northern state of Chihuahua, after a Mennonite child fell ill while visiting relatives in a region in Texas that was suffering an outbreak. Cases surged in Mennonite communities — which have high rates of vaccine hesitancy — and have rippled out across Mexico in the country's biggest outbreak in decades.

SIDE-COMMENT: Just an observation..The one thing missing in athletics is it's practical side... its always competitive and I'd just like to mention to the layperson about the merits of being athletic and it being of practical benefit in daily activities.

Today I walked with my loved one and we both wore masks...I mowed my lawn in my mask with a self propelled(non-gas/electric) lawnmower.. and in a couple days I'll be making my fourth trip this season/year to the women's Agricultural center across town and back on my bicycle (a six mile round trip) to pick up my farmer's market vegetable box in my mask.

Its kind of exciting because I am using athletics for practical ends and unlike most all these athletes I wear a mask and so I get the best of it all.. I get to be an athlete and I never get sick and I'm probably healthy and safe going at my own pace .. I'm 55 years old! So anyway I compete with myself and simply want people to know you can use athletics safely and for practical reasons (and not just in an arena competitively) and one can wear a mask to make it safer like I do.

I am happy to say I haven't had any airborne illness or airborne diseases in over 6 years of masking and so unlike the bicyclist in this article (who may or may not have acquired his illness from an airborne illness or airborne disease), I will be able to to participate in a beautiful masked bicycle ride this week to pick up my farmer's market box of vegetables yet again this week! I hope this may inspire others and other athletes to mask and to think of how they can use athletics and masking when they reach my age to profit and enrich their lives like I do! :)

My game and my trophy is never getting sick and therefore never making my 78 year old loved one sick either.. so far I'm undisputed champion,
The Masked Man

P.S. Personally I don't see what athletes don't just ban together and form a sort of co-op and community where they actually use there athletic abilities and physical prowess. Able bodied men and woman could really do well masking in public, bicycling everywhere and raising gardens... but that's just me thinking in practical worldly terms...

...I just think those really into long term health and a good way of life would use their amazing physical abilities towards self preservation and the good life rather than merely competing with one another for medallions and such. Imagine what a bunch of really powerful physically agile able-bodied men and women who masked together and cooperated could achieve if they could only cooperate with one another's best interests?

Most of these athletes I dare say are like shooting stars and many don't end up really healthy in the long run from what I observe.. tis a shame their abilities seem wasted in my humble opinion. Seems to me these athletes could get so much more from their amazing skills of physical prowess and dexterousness than what they actually wind up with in life.
