Comment/ Public Safety Message essay on Sports Reporting by Masked Man:
I think it’s a somewhat subjective and not necessarily completely factual report when
Glen Quartermain
of The West Australian words it this way:
“Kenyan Paul Eyanae fights illness to win Perth Running Festival marathon.
The reporter could have very easily worded it more humbly to read
Kenyan Paul Eyanae succumbs to undetermined undiagnosed or undisclosed illness therefore it is a unpredictable illness that might even be contagious while Running during a Festival marathon.
Or
Kenyan Paul Eyanae ignores symptoms of what for all we know could be a life threatening illness to win Perth Running Festival marathon.
.. sorry to be a party pooper folks but in reality it is supposed to be customary to seek medical attention if you feel ill …it’s just not a good idea to run around with an undetermined undiagnosed illness. I’m afraid and concerned for this runners life. If you know or suspect a loved one is ill please encourage them to take a time out and seek a diagnosis from someone who is qualified to determine illness.
Let’s not glamorize athletes who ignore symptoms of undisclosed illness or fail to get proper diagnosis of illness before proceeding with engaging with one another socially. Life is more precious than winning a foot race. At least figure out what illness is and take measures to prevent infecting other human beings.. as it might be serious for all parties involved including people we might like that are in close contact and proximity.
Point is an undiagnosed and even a diagnosed illness can be very
unpredictable Let us never assume anything about an undiagnosed or undisclosed illness. Unknown illnesses or viruses are unpredictable and therefore prospectively dangerous. Also the hard cold truth about viruses are: what might not kill you illness-wise, might invariably kill or cause great irreversible damage to somebody else close to you that you like...because by nature it is unpredictable ...
...and those are facts and terms that should all be included in the reporters account of what took place of Kenyan Paul Eyanae's case.
Let's do an independent report that includes Who What Where Why and how:
Who?:Kenyan Paul Eyanae
what?: There's something wrong with Kenyan Paul Eyanae.. Kenyan Paul Eyanae is ill.
where?: no/incomplete report: He says his tummy feels bad? what about his head, throat or a muscular symptom etc. Does he say it's just his tummy!?
why?:? No/incomplete report: We don't the cause and effect or the why it happened because we don't even know what the "illness is!
and how: We don't know how ..we don't how to treat it or keep from infecting loved ones because it is an undisclosed undiagnosed illness. Of course we don't know what to do for this ill member of society. I mean a tummy problem could mean anything! Your guess is as good as mine. His tummy hurts and he is running as fast as he can. "How"!? Again we don't even know what the illness is so we ain't gonna know
how to do anything about it!
... There's nothing journalistically speaking wrong with the following statement as it seems correct and true enough to say: : Kenyan Paul Eyanae is running as fast he can with apparently an undiagnosed unpredictable illness that might hurt you or me and even put us in the hospital begging for our lives!
Now I'm not a doctor but judging by Kenyan Paul Eyanae photo in this article I can't help but notice he looks like skin and bones... He just looks underweight to my unprofessional eye. He looks like he's on the edge of starvation to my amateur eye. As a friend I would speculate if this isn't hard on the heart to possibly be underweight and carry an illness at same time.
That's something that should be investigated. If a person has like no body fat will they survive an illness more or less than a person who has some body fat?
Ive always heard its hard on the heart to be sick and have no body fat on ya ..at least that is what I heard. Not sure if its true or not but I heard if somebody is sick they have trouble eating and so a fat guy lives off his fat while sick. The underweight guy who is suffering from an illness might get heart problems and has more chances to die because he was already starving to begin with so that illness just puts that much more strain on his already underweight body and the heart has to work harder to stay alive.
According to a study published in the journal BMC Public HealthTrusted Source, being underweight is associated with an increased risk for mortality when compared to people with an average BMI. The researchers suggested that being underweight may impair a person’s healing processes following an accident or trauma compared to a person with an average BMI.
There's some practices in sports to coined or termed "make weight" for boxers to compete in certain classes.. anyway there are athletes in various sports that push their body weights to extremes so they can compete in certain weight classes or divisions...It is not uncommon for some athletes to suffer from being underweight..
For athletes interested some of the risks in being underweight
Here's a nice article
